Portrait Techniques

1. Play with Eye Contact

This is when the person either makes eye contact with the lens or is looking off camera. When the look off camera you want to give room for your eye to move and see what the subject is focusing on. If a person is making eye contact then this gives more connection to the image. The viewer wants to make a real connection with subject. Another way to do this is to make two subjects look at each other. This creates a second focus point along with a story in the photo.

2. Shoot Candidly

Posed shots sometimes look posed. When shooting candidly the photo tends to be less awkward. You can see a child playing without interrupting them. They look happy when they are in their own environment. Also you can take photos of people doing everyday things such as making dinner.

3. Focus on One Body Part - Get Close Up

The key is to get up close and focus on one body part. Only capturing one body part leaves room for the viewers imagination. A lot of times what is left out of the image says more than whats in it.

4. Change the Format Framing.

This rule is just to change your camera angles. Instead of just shooting landscape you shoot vertical and instead and visa-versa. This adds variety to the photos. Holding the camera different ways will result in different affects.
